Patterns

We started working on patterns in school. A pattern is a repeated sequence of colours, shapes or objects. We were focusing on making and finishing patterns with two repeated colours. Here are some activities you can try to explore patterns. Some of the children might find these tasks a little bit tricky and they might need some help.

1. Make a pattern caterpillar

An adult should draw a number of circles in a line similar to the caterpillar below.
Ask your child to pick two colours and make a pattern on the caterpillar.
Ask your child to call out the colours on the caterpillar - eg. Blue, red, blue, red, blue, red etc.

2. Patterns with jelly tots.

Multicolored  sweets such as jelly tots are great for exploring patterns.

The first task is to sort the sweets into groups of the same colour (this is an important early mathematical skill too so encourage your child to sort the sweets into groups)

Next ask your child to pick two colours  and make a pattern like I did below

3. Pattern games online

Here are some fun pattern games to play online.

Shape Patterns will help to revise shapes while also exploring  patterns. You should select level 1.
